How Do You Enroll In College As A Veteran?

Blog

If you decide you want to further your career after time served in the armed forces, you have a world of opportunities to take advantage of, especially if you want to go back to school to earn a degree in a certain field. Because enrolling in college as a veteran can be a little more complicated than enrolling as a traditional student, it is best to work with an admissions counselor at a school of your choice to ensure you get access to all of the benefits that are available to you. Here are a few things you need to know if you plan to enroll in college as a veteran.

The college admissions office will have to certify that you are a veteran.

After talking to an admissions counselor, one of the first things that will happen is the school will need to verify that you are a veteran in good standing with the armed forces. The school representative will send a request for certification to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and once they have the verification that you qualify to attend college as a veteran, you can enroll. After you have chosen your courses and passed enrollment criteria, the school will then send your information back to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to show that you are enrolled.

The school will help you find available programs as a veteran.

Because you are a veteran, there are multiple programs that can help you cover the expenses of going to college. For example, if you served after 9/11, the Post 9/11 GI Bill will help you cover the costs of tuition, books, and other expenses while you are enrolled in college as long as you select an in-state institution. Even if you go for an out-of-state college or university, the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program may help you cover costs.

The institution will work with you to ensure you can succeed in college.

If you face specific challenges because you are a veteran, most colleges and universities will take great strides to help you overcome any obstacles you face. For example, if you have to have a little extra time to complete a course because you are a wounded veteran, there may be programs offered through the school that can help ensure you do not fail your classes. Just make sure you are open and honest about any challenges you feel could hinder you from successfully completing your studies.
